Long-Term Goals

Funding for relocation of road

The Florida Department of Transportation approved $250,000 of enhancement funds in Fiscal year 2013 to be used for the Higgs Beach safety improvements.  Specifically, the money can be utilized for construction drawings to realign Atlantic Boulevard and the two impacted intersections (Reynolds and White), and to obtain state and federal clearances and permits (NEPA, ERP, DHR, ROW)

The federal funds require extensive coordination with the Federal Highway Administration and the Florida Department of State to address the gravesites, the fort, and other historic features.  The County will apply for the construction funds when permits are obtained and a mitigation plan is developed for the gravesites (when shovel-ready).  The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners have expressed the importance of this project (safety, historic and recreation) and have committed $1 million toward the road realignment.

Funds for the requested amenities will be raised through private donation.
